Giuseppe Tartini

From Opus 1 Sonatas for violin & continuo:

.

Sonata VII in D

.

Sonata I in A

.

Sonata VI in D

Giuseppe Tartini was one of the finest violinists – if not the finest violinist of his day.  He possessed a prodigious technique, equally comfortable playing in multiple stops, up and down-bow staccato, fast passage work and in the highest positions on the instrument.  Despite his virtuosic tendencies, he also excelled in both the styles of cantabile and suonabile (the latter a term invented by Tartini himself).

It was his wizardry that encouraged and sustained many myths that grew up around his mysterious personality, the most famous of these tales being a visitation by the devil during his sleep; this led to the composition of the violin sonata, The Devil’s Trill.  Despite his forward-looking technique, Tartini impressed on his pupils at the Scuola delle nazioni the importance of studying the Opus 5 sonatas of Arcangelo Corelli.  This deep respect for the works of the older master led to the publication of his Opus 1, a set of sonatas composed in the style of Corelli.  Despite the fact that these works demand considerably more from the violinist, they are masterful in their emulation of Corelli’s style.

Please Note: You are booking for the La Serenissima at 7.30 pm

Initially, it is only possible to purchase a pair of tickets for this concert and, obviously, only members of the same social bubble
can sit together. If at the end of the booking period there are any left, then it may be possible to purchase additional tickets, and
single tickets. The cost for a pair of tickets is £40.

Your booking made via this online system will initially show as unreserved tickets, and you will automatically receive an email
confirming your purchase. As each booking period closes, we will then allocate the seating and send you a PDF ticket with seat numbers on and a plan of
the church so you can see where you are sitting. This should make things quicker and easier on arrival. To make it as fair as possible, with each booking period, we will put the names in a hat and draw them out at random allocating the best seats we have available throughout the process.

NB please remember it is obligatory to wear a mask in the church at all times (unless you have an exemption certificate)
