String quartet in E♭ major Op.127 (40’)

String quartet in B♭ major Op.130 with Grosse Fuge finale (50’)

The second concert of the festival featuring the late quartets of Beethoven is given by the magnificent Endellion quartet. Now in their fortieth season, they are acknowledged as one of the finest quartets currently performing, and have played in just about every major concert hall and festival in the UK as well as tours across the world. After the serene Op.127, perhaps, in terms of form, the most outwardly ‘classical’ of the late quartets, they play Op 130, in the version that Beethoven originally intended, with the monumental Grosse Fuge finale. The fifth movement of the work is the Cavatina, of which Beethoven is reputed to have said that it affected him more than anything else he had ever written and even thinking of it brought him to tears.

“(The Endellion quartet) ..captivates concertgoers with a remarkable rapport, playing to each other with a sense almost of discovery, communicating to the audience on a level of unusual intimacy.” The Guardian
