Le Tombeau de Couperin

Vaughan Williams

The House of Life (arr. Roderick Williams)

Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43

Roderick Williams’s second festival appearance sees him as not only soloist but also arranger as he performs his own orchestration of the wonderful Vaughan Williams ‘House of Life’ cycle. Before this the orchestra play Le Tombeau de Couperin, originally written between 1914 & 1917 as a suite for solo piano and dedicated to the memory of friends of Ravel who had died in World War I. Ravel produced the orchestral version in 1919, omitting two of the original movements. The concert closes with one of Sibelius most glorious symphonies described by the composer as “a confession of my soul.”
