Suite No.6 in D major BWV 1012

I was particularly delighted when Steven agreed to give the opening concert of this year’s festival. He is without question one of the finest cellists in the world and to hear him perform three Bach suites in the wonderful setting and acoustics of St James will make this a very special evening indeed, made even more so perhaps as they will be played by candlelight. In between the suites Steven will perform some miniatures by the great Hungarian composer, György Kurtág. Kurtág’s music has an immediate appeal and emotional intensity that is rare in contemporary music. Steven’s recording of the Bach suites was Gramophone’s Instrumental Disc of the Year and Critic’s Choice at the Classical Brits; he is also one of only two living cellists featured in Gramophone’s Hall of Fame.

These (the Bach suites) are the cellist’s Everest, and Isserlis has waited a long time to commit them to disc: his superb interpretations now put him in that great line of cellists that stretches back to Casals

This is the most wonderful cello-playing, surely among the most consistently beautiful to have been heard in this demanding music, as well as the most musically alert and vivid
