The final piano recital of the 2017 festival is given by one of the finest living pianists, and someone I having been trying to get to the festival for many years. Multi award-winning pianist Nikolai Lugansky regularly appears at some of the world’s most distinguished festivals, including, La Roque d’Anthéron, Verbier, Tanglewood and Ravinia, as well as appearing with all the great orchestras of the world. The Tchaikovsky Seasons is a set of 12 pieces depicting the months of the year, in many of which, the influence of Schumann can be detected. And then, alongside three of Chopin’s most wonderful larger scale pieces, Nikolai plays a group of Mazurkas. In these pieces we are privy to some of Chopin’s most intimate and heartfelt feelings about his homeland.
